Description

When planning your empire in Anno 1800, it’s important to think ahead about how you’ll store spare items. As your production grows, your need for reliable storage grows with it. This is where the Depot becomes essential.

Early on, the Depot in Anno 1800 is one of the most important buildings you can place. Each one increases your island’s storage by 50 tons, giving you more room to manage goods without constantly hitting storage limits. This extra space helps keep your production lines running smoothly.

As you expand, more storage also allows you to turn an island into a distribution hub. With enough Depots, you can stockpile large amounts of goods and move them easily between your other islands. This helps keep trade routes efficient and prevents shortages across your empire.

In short, investing in Depots early builds a strong logistical foundation, making your entire network more flexible and reliable.

Improvements

In this section we will be looking at the improvements that can be made to the Depot in Anno 1800. We will look at the premium placement of the Depot along with improvements that can be made at the Harbourmasters office.

Placement

When placing a Depot in Anno 1800, remember that it can only be built in the harbour area. Because of this, your first step is simply finding enough harbour space.

For basic storage needs, such as increasing capacity on a single island, placement is very simple. You can put the Depot anywhere within the harbour area zone, and your island instantly gains the extra storage.

However, things change once you start building hub islands. A proper logistics hub requires multiple Depots, which greatly increases the island’s total storage. At this point, your layout will depend on the size and shape of the island.

If your island has more than one harbour area, you can dedicate an entire section just to Depots. This lets you push your storage capacity even higher.

But remember, storage alone isn’t enough for a successful hub. As you add more Depots, you’ll also need additional Piers so ships can load and unload quickly. This prevents traffic jams and keeps your trade routes running smoothly. Piers become available once you reach the Artisans level, so keep that milestone in mind when planning your hub.

Harbourmasters office

The Harbourmaster’s Office is a key support building in Anno 1800. It must be placed within the harbour area, and it provides helpful bonuses to any harbour buildings within its influence range. For this reason, it’s smart to plan its location early when designing your harbour.

Once built, the Harbourmaster’s Office can greatly improve the efficiency of important structures like Piers, and Repair Cranes. These boosts help your harbour run smoothly, especially as your trade network becomes larger and more active.

With that in mind, it’s useful to look at the different items you can equip to improve your Depots even further. So next, we’ll explore the item options available for the Depot in Anno 1800 and how they can strengthen your island’s storage capacity.

Layouts

In this section we will be looking at some of the layouts for the Depot in Anno 1800. Lets take a look at these now.

Option 1

In this first layout, you’ll place a Depot in the harbour area alongside your other harbour buildings. This setup gives your island a small but helpful boost to its overall storage capacity.

The exact placement will depend on the size and shape of your harbour. However, Depots are very flexible because they don’t need a direct connection to the Trade Post or a Warehouse. This means you can put them anywhere within the harbour zone without worrying about roads.

In this example, the Depots are placed along the coastline to make good use of the available space. Overall, this layout works well in the early game for islands that aren’t meant to become major storage hubs.

Depot in Anno 1800 Simple layout

In this layout you will have an extra 200 tons of capacity. This will be in addition to your island capacity.

Option 2

In this layout, we’re using a more advanced design that places the Depots away from the coastline. By doing this, you free up valuable shoreline space for buildings that do need a direct connection to the Trade Post or a Warehouse.

This means the coastline can be used for important structures like Piers, Repair Cranes, and other harbour‑focused buildings. At the same time, the Depots can sit safely inland within the harbour area, still giving you full storage benefits without disrupting your logistics.

Overall, this layout offers much more flexibility and helps you make the best use of every tile in your harbour.

Depot in Anno 1800 Sea layout

This layout adds 200 tons of extra storage to your island. The main advantage, however, is that it doesn’t use any coastline. Because of this, you can keep the shoreline free for buildings that do need direct access, such as Piers, Repair Cranes, and other harbour‑focused structures.

Option 3

In this final layout, we’ll be creating a harbour dedicated entirely to Depots. This setup is ideal when you want to build a fully functioning logistics hub. All Depots are grouped together in one harbour section, allowing you to concentrate storage in a single, efficient area. As a result, the island gains a huge amount of storage capacity, making it perfect for large‑scale distribution.

Even so, storage is only one part of running an effective hub. To keep goods moving smoothly, the island will also need plenty of Piers so ships can load and unload without delays. Without enough Piers, even the best storage layout will struggle to handle heavy traffic.

In the next layout, we’ll look at a pier design that supports high‑volume shipping and helps the island function as a true logistics hub. For now, here is the first layout focused solely on Depot placement.

Depot in Anno 1800 Large layout

Here is the second layout, which focuses on the pier setup. In this design, the piers support the large amount of storage created by your Depots. Remember, this pier layout must be on the same island as your Depots for the hub to work properly.

With these piers in place, ships can load and unload much faster, reducing delays and keeping trade routes efficient. Together, the Depot layout and pier layout create the core of a fully functioning hub island.

Depot in Anno 1800 with Piers layout

This layout includes six Piers, supported by six Depots, giving the island an extra 600 tons of storage.

With these Piers, six additional ships can dock at once, alongside the Trading Post. The layout also leaves plenty of open space, making it easy for ships to move in and out of the harbour.

Overall, it’s a clean, efficient setup that works well for a busy hub island.
