Description

These are the Piers in Anno 1800. They are used for increasing the amount of ships that can load/unload at the same time on any given island. The Pier is a self standing building and does not require any road connections to load or unload ships. The Pier will need to be placed with space at the front of it so that the ships can use it. The Piers in Anno 1800 are a must have building if you are creating a hub island for the distribution of goods. Also on standard islands if you have ships sitting waiting to load/unload you can place down a Pier to solve this problem.

Loading/Unloading speed

This is the key metric when dealing with Piers in Anno 1800. The Pier will load/unload at certain speeds depending if additions have been added to the Pier. The standard load/unloading is two tons per second. This can be increased by using the Harbourmasters Office and placing items for the Pier into it.

Pier prioritisation

When you start to set up your trade routes there will come a time when you will need to place down Piers on different parts of your islands. When you are dealing with your trade routes, you will notice quite quickly that your ships are having to travel around islands to load/unload items from them. You will also notice that ships are backed up waiting to load/unload their items.

This is where the Pier comes in to play. When you get to Artisan level you will be able to place down Piers in Anno 1800, to negate this and to speed up your trade routes. When your ships are moving between islands they will use different factors to decide on which Pier or Trading Post to visit. Lets take a look how ships will prioritise which Trade Post or Pier to use.

  • Ship leaves Trade Post or Pier.
  • Ship heads to the closest place that has either a Trade Post, a Pier or both.
  • When the ship gets closer to the harbour it selects where it will load/unload.
  • If multiple spaces are available then it will choose the Docking spot that was built first.

Ships on your Trade Routes will always follow these rules and so you can plan accordingly.

Pier placement

One of the great things with Piers in Anno 1800, is that they can massively effect your Trade Routes in a positive way. As a Ship on a Trade Route will always head to the nearest Pier you can massively decrease the distance that your ships will travel between islands. Let say for example say that you have two islands and a Trade Route between the two. If Island one’s Trading Post is on the other side of the Island to island two then placing a Pier on the side closest to island two will make the Trade Route much more efficient. Below is an image that explains this simply.

Pier placement between two islands in Anno

As we can see here we have placed a Pier in a Harbour area that is close to the Trading Post of the Island one. As you can see from the black line it is a much shorter distance than the red line that has to go all around Island two to load/unload items. So the simple placement of the Pier in Anno 1800, can make the movement around your islands much more efficient.

Improvements

In this section we will look at what improvements we can make to improve the Pier in Anno 1800. We will first look at the placement of the Pier to ensure that the Trade Routes and ship loading/unloading are as efficient as possible. The next thing that we will look at is the use of the Harbourmasters Office. The Harbourmasters Office is similar to the Trade Union and the Town Hall in that items placed into its item slots can have an effect on buildings that are in its influence range.

Placement

Here we will look at the placement of the Pier in Anno 1800. The placement of the Pier is one of the most important things that you can do to improve your trade networks. The placement of the Pier will enable a lot more ships to load/unload at the same time. This will massively increase your efficiency of getting goods around your islands. In this placement we will be showing you how to place the Piers down so that your ships have easy access to them.

As you can see, the ships that come to trade at this island has the ability to drop off at any of three places at the same time.

Harbourmasters Office

In this section we will be looking at what items can be added to the Harbourmasters Office to improve the Pier in Anno 1800. Like the Trade Union and the Town Hall the Harbourmasters Office helps you improve buildings in its influence range by adding items into its slots. There are many different items that can be added to it. Here we will look at some of these items.

Layouts

In this section we will look at what layouts can benefit you by using the Pier. These layouts will vary on what they can offer you. They will look at a simple layout that can increase your number of ships that can trade at a time. The next one we will look at is creating a hub island this one will entail a reasonable amount of Piers that you will have to use. The final one will to make transport easier between islands.

Option 1

This is the first layout that we will look at. Here we will place down two extra Piers that will assist in the load/unloading process for the island. Having the extra piers means that more ships can dock at the same time. Here we can have three ships loading and unloading at the same time.

Simple Pier placement in Anno 1800

With this simple layout your Island will be able to load/unload at six ton per second.

Option 2

This next layout is a layout that you can use for a hub island. A hub island is a island that will have all of your items transported to before going to other islands. This means that you will need a huge amount of Piers on the Hub Island to accommodate multiple ships arriving at the same time. You will also need to be aware that Ships will also need to go to the other Islands with other items that they do not produce. Below we can see the movement of the Trade routes that the Ships will use to transport items to and from your Hub Island.

For this you will need to ensure that their are numerous Piers placed on your Hub Island for the other Islands to trade with. You will also need to ensure that the other Islands have enough Piers to accept the items coming to them.

Option 3

In this layout we will look at improving the efficiency of ships between your islands. One of the problems when trading in Anno 1800 is that the ships have to go around the island to the other side when transferring goods between them. The way to deal with this is to place a Pier down on a harbour that is closer to the island. This can save a huge amount of time and get our goods transferred around your islands much more efficiently.
