Rum in Anno 1800 is an Artisan need in the Old World, and a crucial mid game production chain. It is made from Sugar Cane, and barrelled into a high value good in the New World, and has to be shipped for distribution to the Old world It boosts population happiness and workforce stability.
What is produced
In this production chain Rum is produced, a key need for your Artisan happiness. The chain relies on three buildings, a Lumberjack Hut, a Sugar Cane Plantation and a Rum Distillery. This chain is only available in the New World and has to be shipped to the Old World to meet the needs of your citizens.
In addition to meeting the needs of your citizens, Rum in Anno 1800 can also be traded and used on expeditions. It provides a ten point morale boost, plus can be used as extra rations and as an offering to build good will.

Buildings in this chain
This production chain relies on three buildings: the Lumberjack Hut, Sugar Cane Plantation, and Rum Distillery. To start, the Lumberjack Hut produces four ton of wood per minute and the Sugar Cane Plantation produces one ton per minute and the Rum Distillery produces two ton per minute.
Because of this, the most efficient early game setup is one Lumberjack Hut, two Sugar Cane Plantations and two Rum Distilleries. The additional wood can be used in other production chains. However, as your population grows, you’ll need to scale up your production to keep pace with rising demand.
| Building | No. needed | Cost per building | Total cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lumberjack Hut | 1 | $100 credits, -10 maintenance, 10 Jornaleros | $100 credits, -10 maintenance, 10 Jornaleros |
| Sugar Cane Plantation | 2 | $500 credits, 6 timber, -5 maintenance, 10 Jornaleros | $1,000 credits, 12 timber, -10 maintenance, 20 Jornaleros |
| Rum Distillery | 1 | $2,500 credits, 6 timber, -50 maintenance, 30 Jornaleros | $2,500 credits, 6 timber, -50 maintenance, 30 Jornaleros |
| Total | $6,100 credits, 18 timber, -70 maintenance 60 Jornaleros |
Lumberjack Hut (New World)

In this first section we will be describing the lumberjack hut. The lumberjack hut will plant and harvest trees into wood for you, ready for the Rum Distillery to turn them in to barrels of Rum. The Lumberjack’s hut will start producing wood much quicker if the area you place the building in already has trees. If you place where there are no trees you will have to wait for them to be planted first.
To build the Lumberjack Hut in the New World you will need the following:
- $100 credits,
- 4×4 tile space (plus at least 205 free tile space within its radius).
As well as the above, you will also need the following ongoing costs:
- $10 credits per minute for maintenance,
- 10 Jornaleros.
Once these conditions are met the Lumberjack Hut will reliably produce four ton of wood per minute. As a result, you will have a steady supply of wood for your Rum Distillery.

- Function: to turn trees in to wood ready for the Rum Distillery to turn them into barrels of Rum.
- Production Rate: produces four ton of wood per minute.
- Unlocks: at Artisan level in the Old World and at Jornaleros in the New World.
- Region: available in the Old World and the New World but costs and materials are different in each.
Sugar Cane Plantation

The Sugar Cane Plantation is the second building in this production chain for Rum in Anno 1800, and it is only available in the New World. Therefore, your first step is to launch an expedition to discover the region. Once you arrive, you’ll need to find an island with Sugar Cane fertility. After securing a suitable island, the next stage is to establish your settlement and then choose the best location for your plantation.
Because it takes time for your ships to travel between the New World and the Old World, it’s wise to begin producing Sugar Cane as soon as you can. This way, you’ll already have a supply ready by the time you’re prepared to start making barrels of Rum.
To build the Sugar Cane plantation , you will need:
- $500 credits
- 6 Timber
- 3×4 tile space for the building plus 128 tiles for the fields.
As well as the above, you will also need the following ongoing costs:
- $5 credits per minutes for maintenance
- 10 Jornaleros
Once all of the above conditions have been met, the Sugar Cane Plantation will produce one ton of Sugar Cane per minute. As a result you will have a steady supply to send to the Rum Distillery.

This is a simple layout for the Sugar Cane Plantation in Anno 1800. As you can see it is in a simple shape to replicate, ready for when you need to increase your production as your empire grows.

- Function: to produce Sugar Cane.
- Limitations: needs to have Sugar Cane fertility.
- Production Rate: produces one ton of Sugar Cane per minute.
- Unlocks: at Artisan level in the Old World and 100 Jornaleros in the New World.
- Region: Can only be built in the New World.
Rum Distillery

The Rum Distillery is the last building in the production chain for Rum in Anno 1800, and is only available in the New World. The Rum Distillery makes barrels of Rum from the Sugar cane and wood at a rate of two tons per minute. Although it is made in the New World it is an Artisan need so will need to be shipped back to the Old World.
To build the Rum Distillery, you will need the following:
- $2,500 credits
- 6 timber
- 4×4 tile space for the building.
As well as the above costs and materials you will also need the following ongoing costs:
- 30 Jornaleros
- $50 credits per minute for maintenance.
Once these conditions are met, the Rum Distillery will produce two tons of Rum per minute. As a result, you will have a steady supply to send back to the Old World for your Artisans and eventually you Engineers.

- Function: to produce barrels of Rum.
- Production Rate: produces two tons of Rum per minute.
- Unlocks: at Artisan level in the Old World and at 100 Jornaleros in the New World.
- Region: only available in the New World.
Technology Tree
When setting up your production chain for Rum in Anno 1800, it’s important to keep your buildings balanced so each part of the chain runs efficiently. For this reason, the ideal starting ratio is one Lumberjack Hut, two Sugar Cane Plantations and one Rum Distillery. With this setup, the plantation and distillery will produce a steady supply of Rum, however there will be a surplus of wood that an be used in other production chains or traded. However, as your population grows, you’ll eventually need to expand your production to keep up with rising demand.
This setup ensures that your Sugar Cane Plantation and Wood all flow smoothly into the final production of Rum in Anno 1800.

This is the technology tree for the production of Rum in Anno 1800. This is your starting ratio but as you population increases you will need to scale it up.
Layout
To begin with, producing Rum in Anno 1800 requires a fairly simple setup. This is because the chain uses three buildings, one Lumberjack Hut and two Sugar Cane Plantation and a Rum Distillery, so you’ll need a generous amount of space. On top of that, the chain operates in the New World whilst the Artisans need it in the Old World, meaning you must account for shipping times and transport costs. In this layout, we’ll be using the ratios shown in the technology tree above.
Once everything is placed, the chain will produce two tons of Rum per minute. As a result, your citizens will enjoy a steady supply to meet their needs. Any surplus can be traded or taken on Expeditions for a useful morale bonus. Finally, make sure the buildings follow the arrangement shown in the diagram, as proper placement is essential for maintaining maximum productivity.
This is the layout for the Rum production in the New World. Once it is produced it will need to be shipped to the Old World.

Improving productivity
On achieving workers you will find that you can now build a Trade Union. Trade Unions can be used for numerous things in Anno 1800. They boost productivity, buildings within the unions radius do not need roads to receive the benefit. As buildings can only be affected by one Trade union at a time it is essential that you do not overlap in your design stage. It is also essential that you pick your items carefully as each Trade Union can only hold three items.
For the Rum, the Trade Union will be able to apply to all of the buildings in the layouts both in the New World and the Old World. Make sure to follow the illustrations closely, as this will ensure everything works correctly.
Here we have placed a Trade union in the layout in order to improve production. The Trade Union covers all of the buildings in this chain.

Using electricity
Lumberjack Hut

A Lumberjack Hut does benefit from electricity in the New World, but only under the same condition as every other production building: it must be inside the power plant radius and connected by a rail network. Once powered, its output increases dramatically, which makes it far more efficient for supporting Rum production.
Sugar Cane Plantation

A Sugar Cane Plantation does benefit from electricity, but the effect is different from most production buildings because plantations don’t have a traditional production cycle. Electricity speeds up the transport carts, which increases the effective output of the plantation.
Rum Distillery

Electricity gives the Rum Distillery one of the biggest productivity boosts in the entire New World chain. Once powered, it becomes dramatically more efficient and lets you shrink your Rum layout while increasing output.
Electricity increases the production speed by 200% doubling the output from two tons per minute to four tons per minute. As a result, this upgrade has an immediate impact on both supply for your population and trade profits.
