Description
The Saltpetre Works is the building used to obtain Saltpetre in Anno 1800. Once you reach the Engineer level, it becomes available and marks the starting point of the Advanced Weapons production chain. From there, its main purpose is to supply Saltpetre for producing Dynamite Factory, which is essential for the rest of the chain.
To place the Saltpetre Works, you need both harbour space and nitrate fertility on the island. When it is fully operational, the building produces half a ton of Saltpetre per minute, giving you a steady but modest supply for your industrial needs.
What is produced
Saltpetre, also known as Nitrate, is a key resource in Anno 1800. In the production chain, it is mainly used to create Dynamite at the Dynamite Factory, which you need for the Advanced Weapons chain. Because of this, Saltpetre becomes an important early ingredient that keeps the entire chain running efficiently.
Improvements
In this section, we’ll look at the different improvements you can make to the Saltpetre Works. To begin with, we’ll look at its placement. Since the Saltpetre Works can only be built in the harbour, its location is already quite restricted, which means there’s very little flexibility in where you can position it.
After that, we’ll explore the items you can add to the Trade Union to boost the building’s productivity. We’ll also look at the items available for the Harbourmaster’s Office, as these can provide additional bonuses specifically for harbour-based buildings like the Saltpetre Works.
Finally, we’ll examine what happens when you supply the Saltpetre Works with Electricity, and how this upgrade affects its overall output.
Placement
In this section, we’ll look at how to place the Saltpetre Works to keep Saltpetre production efficient in Anno 1800. To begin, placement is very limited because the building must be placed in the harbour. This means you don’t have many options for where it can go.
Because of this, the easiest and most effective setup is to place the Saltpetre Works right along the harbour edge and give it a direct connection to the Trade Post. This keeps travel time short and helps Saltpetre move quickly into your storage.

Trade Union
In this section, we’ll look at the improvements you can gain by adding items to a Trade Union. To begin with, these items can be found in many different places across your Anno world. For example, you can buy them from NPCs, earn them through expeditions, or obtain them by defeating enemies. In addition, there are several other ways to collect these items as you progress through the game.
Electricity
When adding Electricity to the Saltpetre Works it will double the output.
Layouts
In this section, we’ll look at the different layouts you can use for the Saltpetre Works. To begin with, layout options are very limited because the building can only be placed in the harbour. This restriction means you don’t have much freedom when arranging your production area.
Even so, there are still a few practical layouts you can use to keep production efficient. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some layout options now.
Option 1
In this layout we will look at placing the Saltpetre Works in the harbour area next to Trading Post. This will produce an efficient way for the Saltpetre to get into your inventory.
Option 2
In this layout we will be linking the Saltpetre Works straight to the Trading Post. We will also be placing down a Warehouse and a Dynamite Factory so that the production of Dynamite can start.
As we can see here the Saltpetre in Anno 1800 will be mined from the sea next to the Trading Post and then be transferred into your inventory. This will then be transported to your Warehouse and then into the Dynamite Factory. The Dynamite will then go straight back to the Warehouse and be available for other factories.
