These are Glasses in Anno 1800. Glasses are a mid-tier consume good used by multiple classes across the Old World and the New World. The Glasses production chain is a complex chain that contains many buildings to get the end product. The Spectacle factory requires two items for the production of Glasses. The first item that the Spectacle Factory requires is Glass, this is obtained from a Sand Mine and the a Glassmakers. The next item that the Spectacle Factory will require is Brass. Brass is produced in a Brass Smeltery from a Copper Mine, and a Zinc Mine. Once the Spectacle Factory receives these it can then start producing Glasses.
What is produced
This is the production chain for Glasses. Glasses are a basic need of both the Engineers and Investors. They are also a Luxury need of both the Elders and Obreros.

Buildings in this chain
Here we will look at what buildings are required for the production of Glasses. The items that the Spectacle Factory requires are Glass and Brass. The first item that the Spectacle Factory will require is Glass. To get Glass you will need a Sand Mine and also a Glassmakers. The next item that the Spectacle Factory needs is Brass. To get Brass you will need both a Copper Mine and a Zinc Mine. These will then need to go to the Brass Smeltery for the production of Brass. Once you have completed both of these items you can then produce Glasses.

Sand Mine

This production chain begins with a Sand Mine. The Sand Mine is placed in the Harbour area and can be placed in an Harbour area. becomes available at the Artisan level and you require 1 Artisan to unlock it. The Sand Mine is the First Factory in the Glasses Production Chain which you will need for the first item for the production of Glasses.
To build a Sand Mine it will cost you:
- $2000 Credits
- 6 Timber
- 5 Bricks
In addition to the construction costs you will also need to account for the following ongoing costs:
- 25 Workers
- – $120 credits per minute in Maintenance
Once you have met these conditions the Sand Mine will then produce two tons of Sand per minute. So your Glassmakers will have a steady flow of Sand for the production of Glass.

- Function: Harvests sand from the coastline.
- Placement: Needs free coastline.
- Production Rate: one ton of sand per minute.
- Efficiency tip: To keep the Sand mine at 100% productivity ensure you have enough free coastline. Next, ensure you have enough Workers to work the mine.
Glassmakers

The Glassmaker is the next step in the production of Glasses in Anno 1800, turning raw sand into glass. Glass is a crucial mid game material, and you’ll rely on it not only for Glasses, but also for items like windows, light bulbs, once you reach engineer level and several advanced industrial goods.
To begin with, the Glassmaker takes in sand from your Sand Mines and produces glass. As a result, it becomes the central link between your coastal extraction and your more advanced manufacturing buildings.
To build a Glassmaker you will need the following:
- $5400 credits
- 6 timber
- 10 bricks
- 8 steel beams
- 4×4 free tile space.
As well as the above cost and materials you will also need the following ongoing items:
- 100 Artisans
- $100 credits per minute for maintenance.
Once these costs and materials are set the Glassmaker will reliably produce two tons of glass per minute. As a result, you will have a steady supply of glass for your Windows in Anno 1800.

- Function: To turn the harvested sand in to glass.
- Placement: The glassmaker can be placed anywhere on your island, although ideally it should be placed near to the Sand Mine to cut down on transfer times.
- Production Rate: Produces two tons of glass per minute.
- Efficiency tip: To keep the Glassmaker at 100% you need to ensure you have a steady supply of sand and enough Artisans to work the factory.
Copper Mine

This is the Copper Mine. You will need to place down Copper Mines on top of Copper deposits. The Copper Mine is one of two mines that are required for the production of Brass. When dealing with the Copper Mine you will have to locate which island have Copper on them and then either build the extra factories on these islands or transport the Copper to another island.
To build the Copper Mine it will cost you:
- $5000 Credits
- Timber 8
- Bricks 15
- Steel Beams 12
- Windows 10
- Reinforced Concrete 10
In addition to these construction costs you will also need to account for the following:
- 25 Workers
- 250 Credits per minute in Maintenance
When working at 100% the Copper Mine will produce two tons of Copper per minute. This will enable your production chains to run at maximum efficiency.

- Function: To mine Copper
- Placement: The Copper Mine can only be placed on islands that have Copper deposits available. You can only place the Copper Mine directly on top of these deposits.
- Production Rate: Produces two tons of Copper per minute.
Zinc Mine

This is the Zinc Mine it is placed directly on top of Zinc deposits that are located on some of the islands in Anno 1800. The Zinc Mine is one of two mines that are required for the production of Brass. If you can it is best to place both of these mines on the same island if possible. This will limit the amount of transportation that you will need to do.

Tech tree
This is the Tech tree for the production of Glasses in Anno 1800. This is a complex tech tree for this layout as the final product requires two items instead of one which we see quite often This Tech tree will show a complete layout for the Spectacle factory

Layout
In this layout we can see that it is quite a complicated layout. We can see that we have placed down Warehouses quite close to the individual sections. The individual sections that we are discussing is the Glass production. This mini section which consists of a Sand Mine and Glassmakers. When the Glass is made it will go straight into your inventory by way of the Warehouse. We also have the mines that are required. These are a Copper Mine and a Zinc Mine, and once again they will enter into your inventory via the Warehouse located close by. The last mini section is the final stage of production. This contains the Brass Smelteries and the Spectacle Factories. Once again we can see the Warehouse close by, this time it work to both send the Glass, Zinc and Copper out to the correct factories and also to accept the finished Glasses back into your inventory.

Improving productivity
For improvements for this layout we will first look at the use of Trade unions. Trade unions can be used for many things in Anno 1800. They can boost productivity and efficiency for buildings that are in their influence range. Lets now take a look at a layout that contains Trade unions to increase the productivity of these buildings.
