These are Penny Farthings in Anno 1800. They are produced at the Bicycle Factory in the Old World. Penny Farthings are made from Steel and Caoutchouc. The Steel can be produced from the Steel production chain and Caoutchouc which is obtained in the New World. These will combine in the Bicycle Factory for the production of Penney Farthings.
What is produced
These are Penny Farthings. The Penny Farthing is a late game addition that isa Luxury need of both Engineers and Investors along with a Lifestyle need of your Workers. The Penny Farthing can only be produced in the Old World but it will require Caoutchouc that can only be farmed in the New World. Once you have these items you can then start producing them.

Buildings in this chain
Their are numerous buildings that are in this chain. The starting point for this chain consists of three buildings. These are the Iron Mine and the Coal Mine you will need to place these down on top of the deposits that are available on the islands. When you have these mined the next thing to do is place down a Furnace that can turn these items into Steel from Steel production chain. The Steel will then move on to the Bicycle Factory and is the first item that is required. The next item that is needed it Caoutchouc that can only be obtained in the New World. When you place down your Caoutchouc plantation you will need to pace on islands in the New World that has Caoutchouc fertility. This will then have to shipped back to the Old World for the production of Penny Farthings

Iron Mine

You can only build an Iron mine on islands that actually contain Iron deposits. To check this, start by looking at the resource bar, which lists all materials available on that island. If you prefer a more hands on approach, you can also explore the island directly and hover over each mining site to see what resource it provides. Finally, keep in mind that Iron deposits are always found near mountains, so those areas are the best places to check first.
To build an Iron mine, you will need the following items:
- $800 credits
- 4 timber
- 5 bricks
- Iron deposit on the island
As well as the build costs, you will also need the following ongoing costs:
- 50 workers
- $50 credits per minute for maintenance
Once these conditions are met, the Iron Mine will begin producing four iron ore per minute. As a result, you’ll have a steady and reliable supply to keep your production chains running smoothly. In turn, this consistency helps prevent shortages, ensuring that your city can continue growing without interruption.

- Function: mines iron ore.
- Limitation: can only be placed on top of iron ore deposit.
- Unlocks: unlocks at 300 workers.
- Depletion: Iron mines do not deplete over time.
- Region: available in the Old World and Cape Trelawney
Coal mine

Like the iron mine, the Coal mine can only be built in specific areas of the map. To find the right spot, start by checking which mining sites are designated for coal. Once you’ve located a coal deposit, try to place your Coal Mine as close as possible to your Iron Mine, since this setup creates a more efficient production chain. In addition, remember that the Coal Mine only becomes available once you reach 250 Artisans, so it’s important to plan your progression with this milestone in mind.
To build the Coal mine, you will need the following:
- $600 credits
- 4 timber
- 5 bricks
- Coal deposit on the island
You will also need the following ongoing costs:
- 50 workers
- $50 credits per minute for maintenance
Once these conditions are met, the mine will continuously produce four tons of coal per minute. As a result, you’ll have a steady and reliable supply to keep your Furnace running without interruption. In turn, this consistent fuel flow helps maintain smooth production, preventing slowdowns and keeping your Steel production chain efficient.

- Function : mines coal.
- Limitation : can only be placed on coal deposits.
- Unlocks : unlocks at 250 Artisans.
- Depletion : coal mines do not deplete over time.
- Region : available in the Old World and Cape Trelawney
Furnace

The Furnace will take the coal and the iron ore and turn these into Steel using the Steel production chain. Steel in Anno 1800 is an important material, as it is needed to make Steel beams in the Steel beams production chain and Weapons, and in later game items such as the Sewing machines production chain.
To build the Furnace, you will need the following items:
- $500 credits
- 4 timber
- 5 bricks
- 4×7 tile space
As well as the above, you will also need the following:
- 100 workers
- $100 credits per minute for maintenance
Once these conditions are met, the Furnace will continuously produce Two tons of Steel per minute. As a result, you’ll have a steady and reliable supply to keep your empire building going without interruption.

- Function : converts iron ore and coal in to steel.
- Placement : can be placed anywhere.
- Unlocks : unlocks at 300 workers.
- Regions : available in Old World, Cape Trelawney and the New World.
Caoutchouc Plantation

This is the Caoutchouc Plantation it is placed in the New World and needs to be placed on an island with Caoutchouc fertility. Caoutchouc is a important item in Anno 1800 for any items that require rubber in them. This plantation will require Caoutchouc fertility and also transport back to the Old World. You will need to find enough room to place down the 144 fields that this plantation requires to run at maximum efficiency.
To build the Caoutchouc it will cost you:
- $2500 Credits
- 8 Timber
You will also need to cover the running costs
- -$25 Maintenance
- 10 Jornaleros
Once these conditions have been met and you get a trade route setup you will have a steady supply of Caoutchouc for your empire.

- Function: Harvest Caoutchouc from the plantation
- Production rate: one ton per minute
- Regions: New World
- Unlocks at: 200 Jornaleros
Bicycle Factory

This is the Bicycle Factory that is used for the production of the Penny Farthing. The Bicycle Factory will take Steel and Caoutchouc and turn these into Penny Farthings taking one minute to produce four tons. The Bicycle Factory can only be placed in the Old World so you will have to ship Caoutchouc to the Old World from the New World.
To build the Bicycle Factory it will cost you:
- $42000 Credits
- 8 Timber
- 15 Bricks
- 12 Steel Beams
- 10 Windows
- 10 Reinforced Concrete
You will also need to cover these running costs:
- -$1200 Maintenance
- 150 Engineers
When you have these met you will produce 4 tons of Penny Farthings per minute.

- Function: Produces Penny Farthings
- Production rate: Will produce four tons per minute
- Regions: Old World
- Unlocks at: 500 Engineers
Tech Tree
Here is the Tech Tree for the Penny Farthing. As we can see from the Tech Tree it is quite a simple layout and the only issue comes from having to get Caoutchouc from the New World to the Old World. As we can see the Iron Mines and Coal Mines lead directly into the Furnace for the production of Steel. This Steel is then fed directly into the Bicycle Factory. Next we can see the Caoutchouc going into the Bicycle Factory from the New World.

Layout
As we can see from the layout below we have the two mines that are placed close to the Warehouse. This section might have to change as this depends on where the Coal and Iron deposits are. This means that both of these items will enter you inventory very quickly and they can both be sent over to the Furnaces so that the Steel can be made. The Steel is then moved onto the Bicycle Factory. You can also see that we have a Trading post in this layout. This is so that the Caoutchouc can be brought from the New World to this island to be turned in to Penny Farthings.

Improving the productivity
In this section we will look at what items we can add to the Trade union to improve this chains productivity. The Trade union will take in items that you can find around the map from trading with NPC’s, going on expeditions and many more. To receive the benefit from the Trade union you will have to ensure that buildings are in its influence range and that each building is only influenced by one Trade union. Here is a layout that incorporates Trade unions for this production chain.

As we can see here we have placed two Trade unions one will cover the mines and the next one will cover the Furnaces and the Bicycle Factory. Lets now take a look at what items we can add to these buildings.
