How to create the Steam Carriages production chain in Anno 1800

This is the Steam Carriages production chain in Anno 1800. It is a complex production chain that requires a large amount of buildings to get the finished product. The starting point of this production chain is producing Steel and Brass. These items are produced mines. For the Steel you will need a Iron Mine and a Coal Mine. For the production of Brass we will need to Mine Copper and Zinc. These items will then go to the Motor Assembly Line. The next thing that needs to be done is the production of Chassis to achieve this you will have to Wood and Caoutchouc sent to the Coachmakers. Once we have supplied the Steam Motors and the Chassis to the Cab Assembly Line the Steam Carriages will be produced.

What is produced

These are Steam Carriages. They are a consumer good and are a basic need of the Investor class of citizens. Steam Carriages can only be built in the Old World. You can start building Steam Carriages when you get 300 Investors. Being a basic need for the Investors it means that the Investors residences will increase by 4 residents. When taking Steam Carriages on expedition they will give you 30 bonus points to Force skill and 30 bonus points to Morale per 50 tons taken.

Buildings in this chain

In this section we will look at what buildings are in the this chain. Their is a large number of buildings in this chain that will make it a huge challenge when you come the layout or the manufacture of Steam Carriages. To start with you need four different types of mine. These are Copper Mine and Zinc Mine for the production of brass. You will also need Coal Mine and a Iron Mine for the production of Steel. The Copper and Zinc will then go on to the Brass Smeltery for the production of Brass. The Coal and the Iron will go to the Furnace for the production of Steel. Both of these items will then go to the Motor Assembly Line for the production of Steam Motors. The Steam motors will finally go to the Cab Assembly Line. On the other side of the production chain you will require Caoutchouc from the Caoutchouc Plantation and Wood from the Lumberjacks Hut. These two items will then go in to the Coachmakers to turn into Chassis. The Chassis will then go to the Cab Assembly Line for the production of Steam Carriages.

Iron Mine

You can only build an Iron mine on islands that actually contain Iron deposits. To check this, start by looking at the resource bar, which lists all materials available on that island. If you prefer a more hands on approach, you can also explore the island directly and hover over each mining site to see what resource it provides. Finally, keep in mind that Iron deposits are always found near mountains, so those areas are the best places to check first.

To build an Iron mine, you will need the following items:

  • $800 credits
  • 4 timber
  • 5 bricks
  • Iron deposit on the island

As well as the build costs, you will also need the following ongoing costs:

  • 50 workers
  • $50 credits per minute for maintenance

Once these conditions are met, the Iron Mine will begin producing four iron ore per minute. As a result, you’ll have a steady and reliable supply to keep your production chains running smoothly. In turn, this consistency helps prevent shortages, ensuring that your city can continue growing without interruption.

Iron mine production details in Anno 1800
  • Function: mines iron ore.
  • Limitation: can only be placed on top of iron ore deposit.
  • Unlocks: unlocks at 300 workers.
  • Depletion: Iron mines do not deplete over time.
  • Region: available in the Old World and Cape Trelawney

Coal mine

Like the Iron Mine, the Coal mine can only be built in specific areas of the map. To find the right spot, start by checking which mining sites are designated for coal. Once you’ve located a coal deposit, try to place your Coal Mine as close as possible to your Iron Mine, since this setup creates a more efficient production chain. In addition, remember that the Coal Mine only becomes available once you reach 250 Artisans, so it’s important to plan your progression with this milestone in mind.

To build the Coal mine, you will need the following:

  • $600 credits
  • 4 timber
  • 5 bricks
  • Coal deposit on the island

You will also need the following ongoing costs:

  • 50 workers
  • $50 credits per minute for maintenance

Once these conditions are met, the mine will continuously produce four tons of coal per minute. As a result, you’ll have a steady and reliable supply to keep your Furnace running without interruption. In turn, this consistent fuel flow helps maintain smooth production, preventing slowdowns and keeping your steel chain efficient.

Lumberjack’s Hut

In this first section we will be describing the lumberjacks hut. The lumberjacks hut will plant and harvest trees into raw wood for you, ready for the sawmill to turn them in to timber. The Lumberjack’s hut will start producing logs much quicker if the area you place the building in already has trees. If you place where there are no trees you will have to wait for them to be planted first.

To build a Lumberjack hut, you will need:

  • $100 credits.
  • 2 timber planks.
  • a 3×3 tile space for the building, plus at least 205 tiles for the trees.

In addition to the construction costs, running a Lumberjack’s Hut also requires several ongoing resources:

  • 5 farmers.
  • $10 credits per minute for maintenance.

Once these conditions are met, the Lumberjack’s Hut will reliably produce four tons of wood every minute. As a result, you will have a steady supply for your production chains. Finally, this consistency helps keep your city growing without interruption.

  • Function: Harvests raw wood from nearby forested tiles.
  • Placement: Needs undeveloped, wooded tiles in its radius. If none exist, it will plant trees—but this takes time.
  • Production Rate: 1 ton of wood every 15 seconds (4 tons per minute).
  • Efficiency Tip: To keep the Lumberjack’s Hut at 100% productivity, make sure at least 205 of the 240 tiles in its radius stay free of roads or buildings. Next, ensure you have enough farmers to keep the hut staffed. As a result, both placement and workforce become key factors. Finally, by managing space and labour together, you can keep the hut running at maximum efficiency.

Caoutchouc Plantation

This is the Caoutchouc Plantation it is placed in the New World and needs to be placed on an island with Caoutchouc fertility. Caoutchouc is a important item in Anno 1800 for any items that require rubber in them. This plantation will require Caoutchouc fertility and also transport back to the Old World. You will need to find enough room to place down the 144 fields that this plantation requires to run at maximum efficiency.

To build the Caoutchouc it will cost you:

  • $2500 Credits

Tech Tree

This is the Tech Tree for the Steam carriages production chain. As you can see it is a huge layout for this chain that contains 30 buildings. This may mean that you will need to have this layout over more than one island. As we can see from the top part of the Tech Tree we need to produce Steam Motors. For this step we will need four mines that Iron Mine, Coal Mine, Copper Mine and a Zinc Mine. The Iron and the Coal will go to the Furnace for the production of Steel. The Copper and Zinc will go to the Brass Smeltery for the production of Brass. These two components the Steel and the Brass will go to the Motor Assembly Line to produce Steam Motors and these will go into the Cab Assembly Line. On the second section we can see that we have a Lumberjacks hut and a Caoutchouc Plantation that will supply the Coachmakers for the production of Chassis. These Chassis will go to the Cab Assembly Line and combine to make Steam Carriages.

Improving the productivity

In this section we will look at what we can add to the Trade union that can boost the productivity and efficiency of the layout for the Seam Carriages production chain. The Trade union will give benefits to all buildings that are in its radius of influence. You must remember that any building can only be influenced by one Trade union.
